Hydroseeding Lawns in Christchurch & Canterbury
Bare dirt, dust and mud now – green lawn in a matter of weeks.
Gabion Works Hydroseeding offers a residential spray-on lawn service for homes across Christchurch and Canterbury. It’s a smart way to establish a new lawn or revive a tired one without the cost of instant turf or the patchiness of hand-seeding.
We use a compact hydroseeding unit that’s ideal for residential sections, new builds and existing backyards – including those tricky spots that are hard to reach with bigger gear.

What Is Hydroseeding?
Hydroseeding is a way of planting grass where we spray a slurry of grass seed, water, mulch and fertiliser over prepared soil.
That green coating you see on the ground is the mulch – it cushions the seed, holds moisture and helps protect the soil while the lawn is getting started. The result is:
-

Fast, even germination
-

Good moisture retention
-

Less dust and erosion while the lawn establishes itself
In the right conditions, you’ll usually see sprouting within about a week, and a usable lawn over the next few weeks as it thickens and strengthens.
Why Choose Hydroseeding for Your Home Lawn?
Hydroseeding is a great fit for residential properties in Christchurch and Canterbury because it balances cost, speed and quality:
Quicker establishment than dry seed
The mulch layer helps hold moisture around the seed, so grass can germinate and fill in more evenly and quickly than broadcast seeding.More cost-effective than instant turf
You don’t pay for pre-grown rolls of grass, but you still get dense, even coverage when it’s established – a good middle ground between DIY sowing and ready lawn.Even coverage and better appearance
The sprayed mix reaches corners, edges and curves easily, helping avoid bare patches and stripes.Great for challenging spots
Works well on gentle banks, berms, awkward corners and difficult access areas where getting turf in (and keeping it watered) is a pain.Less dust while it grows
The mulch layer helps keep fine soil in place so the area looks tidier and doesn’t blow everywhere while the grass is coming through.
If you’ve got bare earth around a new build, a patchy old lawn you’re ready to reset, or banks that keep eroding, hydroseeding is well worth considering.
Where Hydroseeding Works Best
We focus on residential hydroseeding throughout Christchurch and wider Canterbury. Typical projects include:
New builds with bare section around the house
Replacing old, uneven or weedy lawns
Street-facing berms and front lawns
Gentle banks and batters that need stabilising with grass
Shady or awkward backyards where turf is difficult to lay
Narrow side yards and accessways
If you’re not sure whether hydroseeding will suit your property, we’re happy to have a look and talk you through the options.
How Gabion Works Hydroseeding Works
1. Site Visit or Photos
We start with a quick chat about your section and how you use it – kids, pets, vehicles, outdoor living and how you want to use the space day to day. From there we can work off photos and measurements or visit your property.
We’ll check:
Soil condition
Slope and access
Shady/sunny areas
Where you want lawn vs planting or hardscape
2. Soil Preparation
Hydroseeding works best on well-prepared soil. You can do the prep yourself, or we can help organise it as part of your landscaping work.
Typical prep includes:
Removing existing grass, weeds and debris
Shaping and levelling to get good falls
Adding and spreading topsoil where needed
Firming and lightly raking the surface to create a fine, even seed bed
Good prep is the foundation of a good lawn – it’s worth getting this bit right.
3. Hydroseeding Application
Once the ground is ready, we:
Mix the grass seed, mulch, fertiliser and water in our hydroseeding tank
Spray the slurry evenly across the prepared areas using a hose and nozzle
Check coverage in corners, along edges and on any banks or tricky zones
You’ll see a bright green layer on the soil immediately after application – that’s the mulch doing its job.
4. Aftercare & Growing
We’ll leave you with simple, written aftercare instructions covering:
Watering: little and often at the start, then less frequent and deeper as the lawn establishes
When to first mow and how much to take off
When to apply follow-up fertiliser
5. In good conditions, you’ll usually see:
Green haze of new grass in about 5–7 days
Lawn filling in over 3–4 weeks
Stronger, more resilient lawn over the next couple of months
Hydroseeding vs Instant Turf & Hand Seeding
There’s no one “right” way to grow a lawn – it depends on your budget, timing and expectations. Here’s how hydroseeding compares in broad terms:
Hydroseeding vs instant turf (ready lawn)
Hydroseeding usually costs significantly less than having rolls of turf supplied and laid.
You do have a short establishment period before the lawn is fully usable.
Once established, day-to-day care is similar.
Hydroseeding vs hand seeding
Hydroseeding gives better moisture retention and more even coverage than dry seed scattered by hand.
The mulch helps protect the seed from wind and birds, and reduces wash-off in light rain.
If you’re working to a realistic budget but still want a quality finish and good coverage, hydroseeding often hits the sweet spot.
